Nog niet zo lang geleden was schilderkunst uit Berlijn synoniem met Duitse schilderkunst, waarbij grote gebaren en verhalen niet werden geschuwd. Maar in Berlijn laat een nieuwe generatie schilders zich zien, van zeer diverse komaf. Ze beoefent schilderkunst vol vertrouwen, maar op bescheiden formaat. Kunstbeeld bekijkt vier schilders die het afgelopen jaar opvielen.

GRENSGEBIEDEN

Michael Markwick (1974) groeide op in Michigan als zoon van Nederlandse immigranten en genoot zijn opleiding als schilder aan Indiana University. In zijn schilderijen en houtskooltekeningen varieert hij op natuurlijke motieven. Meestel gaat het om bladeren, bomen en struiken waaruit vervolgens abstracte vormen groeien. Natuur staat in zijn oeuvre meer voor groei, dynamiek en veranderlijkheid, dan voor een vastomlijnd landschapbeeld. De kunstenaar heeft grensgebieden tussen stad en natuur altijd interessant gevonden, daar waar natuur ook verstoord wordt en daar waar de energie van de mens zichzelf terugvindt in het landschap.

 Afgelopen zomer werd Markwick uitgenodigd om voor een Berlijns dagblad, B.Z., een werk te maken voor een speciale editie op 11 september, die geheel was gewijd aan de herdenking van de aanslagen in New York. De grote houtskooltekening die hij maakte, Shelter genaamd, verwijst niet expliciet naar de aanslagen, maar balt de explosiviteit en het drama samen die met die dag verbonden zijn. Het onderwerp hoeft, blijkt hier, niet letterlijk in beeld te worden gebracht om toch de kern van de zaak te raken. En ook hier gebruikt hij een vocabulaire dat aan de natuur is ontleend. Markwick beoefent een vorm van schilderkunst die deels verwant is aan het abstract expressionisme, waarin het gebaar en de daad van het schilderen een inhoud op zich vormen. Uniek en vaak tegen de haren instrijkend is zijn palet, waarin recentelijk veel geel, oranje en zwart voorkomen naast landschappelijke kleuren als blauw en groen. Een onderliggend thema is vergankelijkheid. Dat is in zijn behandeling van de natuur te zien, en in figuren die op plekken in het werk opduiken, zoals levende skeletten of een glimp van een gezicht tussen de bomen.

De kunstenaar kwam in 2002 naar Nederland en vestigde zich in Dordrecht. Vanuit het CBK kreeg hij de mogelijkheid een half jaar in Berlijn te werken en inmiddels werkt hij voornamelijk in de Duitse hoofdstad. In 2010 had hij een opvallende tentoonstelling in het Atelierhof Kreuzberg, in een tentoonstellingsruimte die is verbonden aan het ateliercomplex, waar ook een aantal Nederlandse kunstenaars werken. Daar presenteerde hij een serie groot formaat houtskooltekeningen, onder de titel ‘The Periphery Rising’. Het ging hier, net als in de schilderijen, niet alleen om de voorstelling, maar ook om de kracht daarachter, om de agressie, weifeling of andere energie die in het handschrift ligt besloten.

While Dutch masters of the 17th century were famous for their realism, contemporary art exhibits a wide range of approaches. An important strength of Dutch art still lies in painting and the painterly view.

A number of the participating artists have a strongly developed eye for abstraction and clarity, in the tradition of Mondriaan. Other participants choose classic genres like interiors and landscapes, and shed a modern light on it. In general, for the Dutch, the desire towards the spiritual or the sublime derives its prestige from a sober and earthly mentality.

What connects the work of different generations is the importance of the visual. Moreover, other motives, conceptual or not, play a role, such as the interest in image forming, artistic authorship and questioning visual clichés.

Berlin
The artists exhibited here have all left their homeland and are part of the tradition of Dutch artists who have crossed borders to develop themselves artistically. The current generation even seems to experience going abroad as a necessity.

Berlin’s international context offers artists new perspectives and forces them to reflect on their positions. On the one hand, the Dutch background of these artists gains prestige by their stay in Berlin, and on the other hand, it is actually downplayed due to this fact.

Friday July 9: Book Launch, Performance, Film, Artist Talks
On July 9, a catalogue will be presented in which the artists are introduced by curator Jurriaan Benschop. The launch of the catalogue takes place on a special evening with artist talks, the screening of the documentary Dutch Light and a performance by the Dutch poet K. Michel. Die Ausstellung zeigt Werke von sechs niederländischen Künstlern, die in Berlin arbeiten.  Die Niederlande sind seit jeher als Land der Malerei bekannt. Die Meister des 17. Jahrhunderts erlangten weltweit Berühmtheit und sind auch in deutschen Museen gut vertreten, zum
Beispiel in der Berliner Gemäldegalerie. Das Bild der niederländischen Gegenwartskunst ist weniger vollständig. Die Ausstellung füllt hier eine Leerstelle und zeigt, dass sich im „malerischen Blick“ noch immer eine wichtige Inspirationsquelle für die niederländische Kunst verbirgt.

Blick ohne Ende führt das Werk von sechs niederländischen Künstlern zusammen, die in Berlin arbeiten und international auf sich aufmerksam machen: Tjebbe Beekman (1972), Ronald de Bloeme (1971), Arjan van Helmond (1971), Maarten Janssen (1965), Michael Markwick (1974) und Lidwien van de Ven (1963).

Ein Blick, der kein Ende nimmt

Während die Meister des 17. Jahrhunderts aufgrund ihres Realismus gerühmt werden, bedient sich die Gegenwartskunst einer Vielzahl von Ansätzen. Was das Werk von unterschiedlichen Künstlern und Generationen verbindet, ist das Interesse für das Visuelle und die Erscheinungsform von Dingen. Hierin offenbart sich ein Blick, der kein Ende nimmt und der in der Oberfläche das Wesentliche findet. Danach und daneben spielen andere (konzeptuelle) Motive eine Rolle, etwa die Frage nach der Bildung einer Vorstellung, nach künstlerischer Urheberschaft und danach, welche visuellen Klischees uns zur Gewohnheit
geworden sind.

Für einige der teilnehmenden Künstler gilt, dass ihr Blick für Abstraktion und Klarheit in der Tradition Mondrians stark entwickelt ist. Sie denken in reduzierten, geometrischen Flächen. Andere Teilnehmer wählen klassische Genreszenen wie ein Interieur oder eine Landschaft und lassen darin ein zeitgenössisches Licht erscheinen. Das Verlangen nach spirituellen oder erhabenen Inhalten nimmt ausgehend von einer nüchternen und erdigen Mentalität Gestalt an. Freiheit und Fantasie werden groß geschrieben, gleichzeitig wollen die Niederländer jedoch „mit beiden Beinen fest auf dem Boden stehen“.

Berlin
Gemeinsam ist den in der Ausstellung zu sehenden Künstlern, dass sie alle ihre niederländische Heimat verlassen haben. Sie fügen sich damit in eine Tradition von Künstlern, die die Grenzen der Niederlande überschritten haben, um sich künstlerisch weiter entfalten zu können. Die heutige Generation scheint den Schritt ins Ausland sogar als Notwendigkeit zu
erfahren. Der internationale Kontext Berlins bietet frische Perspektiven und zwingt zu einer erneuten Reflexion des eigenen Werkes. So gewinnt die niederländische Identität dieser Künstler durch den Aufenthalt in Berlin einerseits an Kontur, andererseits wird sie gerade dadurch relativiert.

Publikation und Rahmenprogramm
Am 9. Juli findet ein Themenabend mit Film, Vortrag und KünstlergespraÅNchen statt, an dem auch der die Ausstellung begleitende Katalog präsentiert wird. Zunächst wird der Dokumentarfilm Dutch Light zu sehen sein, worin Künstler und Wissenschaftler sich dem Mythos des besonderen holländischen Lichtes annähern. Im Anschluss daran trägt der Dichter K. Michel eine Auswahl neuer Gedichte vor. Die teilnehmenden Künstler sprechen darüber, wo sie ihre Werke im größeren Zusammenhang der niederländischen, deutschen und internationalen Kunst verorten. Außerdem wird der Frage nachgegangen, was die Stadt Berlin für sie und die Entwicklung ihrer OEuvres bedeutet. Die KünstlergespraÅNche werden
moderiert von Heinz Stahlhut (Leiter der Sammlung Bildende Kunst an der Berlinischen Galerie) und Jurriaan Benschop (Kurator Blick ohne Ende).

“I always need to start with a landscape,” I once heard a writer say when asked, in an interview, how his novels took shape. First comes a spatial image, and within that the characters subsequently emerge as the story unfolds. In the work of visual artist Michael Markwick, a similar kind of thing takes place. He, too, seems to need the landscape as a means to generate something else: in his case, not a narrative or a character, but a drama in terms of form, which does show human characteristics though. The large charcoal drawings that he produced in 2009 show landscapes. The question that arises on looking at them is whether ‘landscape’ can actually be regarded as the subject being dealt with by the artist, or if it serves rather as a setting for other matters.

Take, for instance, the gesture with which these drawings have been made: the curves charged with energy, the physical effort that preceded the work and which now remains in the charcoal. See the play of lines as something that becomes independent of the landscape, takes its own course, resembles a cloverleaf of roads or an industrial obstacle—as something that clashes with and does not serve the depiction of the woods or countryside, but violates it. All of that belongs to the content of these works and can sooner be called abstract or formal rather than landscape-oriented. There are crash points, places where forms collide with each other, but also tranquil areas, like the oasis of circles where movement comes to a standstill. When the works are seen along side each other, they become images in which a great deal gets tumbled about, where change with a capital C takes place—be it constructively or destructively. Contortion, eruption, transformation.

 ”Apocalyptic,” the painter has called his work at times. That particular perspective does hold true. Look at the dark sky that hangs ominously over the field like tent canvas; the sense of open wilderness turns into oppressiveness. In Trench we see pollard trees lining either side of a trench that draws the eye into the depths. Branches protrude outward, like rebellious arms imploring the heavens. But these are not people protesting; these are branches and trees in a tense landscape. Here man has assumed the guise of nature, has become the tree and leads the existence of branches. And this is how many drawings are, as well as paintings made by the artist in recent years. Their figuration is whimsical and ambivalent. Among the trees we catch a glimpse of a person, a face or a pair of eyes emerging in the bark. And then it vanishes again, like a ghost: a latent figure flitting about, yet having no substance.

The character of these drawings is complex, ranging from the hectic and menacing to the delicate and seductive. It’s interesting to wonder what is being controlled and conceived and what is actually unintentional, unconscious or coincidental in terms of its figuration—and corresponding ‘content’. The artist no doubt works on the basis of ideas as to how composition and balance should look. What conditions should be met by a landscape. His handwriting also reflects a certain interest in the style of the old masters. But cropping up through that is something which eludes control and consciousness: areas that come as a gift to the artist while he works and which take shape as a ‘second voice’ in the work’s fervor. And that’s precisely where something essential occurs in terms of the content. The drawings could be seen as junctions of forces that are situated in landscape. A face appears where, formally speaking, only trees have been drawn. Form is about to change its guise. The landscape is never merely landscape.

Kunst in Kreuzberg e. V. freut sich ,eine Werkgruppe des Niederländers und gebürtigen US-Amerikaners Michael Markwick (geb.1974) auszustellen. Seit 2005 lebt und arbeitet Markwick in Berlin. Mit “The Periphery Rising” verlässt er die Malerei und zeigt statt dessen großformatige Kohlezeichnungen. Basierend auf seinen Untersuchungen über bewaldete Landschaften, erscheinen sie gleichzeitig wohlbekannt und fremdartig

Oft ist gerade das, was an der Peripherie des Blickfelds erscheint, das eigentlich Fesselnde – auch wenn es meist übersehen wird. Die 2 x 3 Meter großen Zeichnungen belegen Markwicks Vielseitigkeit und Virtuosität und geben dem Betrachter die Möglichkeit, eine andere Seite seines Schaffens kennen zu lernen. Markwicks Werk positioniert sich inmitten der Bandbreite expressionistischer Traditionen zwischen Abstraktion und Repräsentation. Sowohl kraftvoll als auch sensibel verschmilzt er Erinnerungen und Naturerlebnisse mit einer Art “apokalyptischem Sound”.

Die neue Werkgruppe wird im Ausstellungsraum des Atelierhofs Kreuzberg, einer jungen und wachsenden Plattform für zeitgenössische Kunst in Berlin, zu sehen sein.

**In der Ausstellung wird außerdem ein begleitender Text des niederländischen Autors und Kurators Jurriaan Benschop präsentiert.

Zuletzt waren Markwicks Arbeiten in der Galerie Cluster in Berlin, im Dordrecht Museum in den Niederlanden und bei der Netherland Royal Painting Prize Exhibition im Gemeente Museum Den Haag zu sehen.

Kunst in Kreuzberg e. V. presents the American-born Dutch artist Michael Markwick (1974) who has been living and working in Berlin since 2005. Stepping outside his usual painting medium, Markwick presents an unusual solo exhibition of recent, large-scale charcoal drawings based increasingly on his investigations of wooded landscapes that seem both natural and alien at the same time. It is often what is on the edge of vision (the periphery) that is the most compelling and yet overlooked.

The large-scale drawings (3×2 meters) show Markwick’s versatility and virtuosity, offering a compelling view into another aspect of his creative work. Markwick works from a variety of expressionistic traditions between abstraction and representation, showing both power and sensitivity, and combining memories and experiences of nature with apocalyptic overtones.

This new body work is presented at the gallery space Atelierhof Kreuzberg, a new and growing platform for contemporary art in Berlin. The exhibition also presents an accompanying text by Dutch author and curator Jurriaan Benschop.

Markwick’s other recent exhibitions have included shows at the Gallery Cluster, Berlin; the Dordrechts Museum, The Netherlands; and The Netherlands Royal Painting Prize Exhibition at the Gemeente Museum Den Haag.

How do humans interact with the leftover nature that surrounds them? Photographer Anja de Jong (NL, works in Dordrecht) went travelling with this question. She visited places in the world where the line between original nature and the landscape shaped by humans could still sharply be seen. Although the untouched was photographed, you can also see it disappear, as there is still a visible element of human civilization (or disturbance): a grave, a tyre tack or an observatory, for example. In a series of clear, unsentimental black and white photos entitled Borderland viewers are led along changing areas in locations like Hawaii, La Palma, Antarctica and Namibia.

Michael Markwick (US/NL, works in Dordrecht and Berlin) spent part of his youth in a trailer park in Michigan on the outskirts of the city. It is a remarkable border area where nature and human settlements collide, where landscape and trash mix. Memories of this became the starting point for a number of landscape-focused paintings, including Darker Dualities. In Markwick’s work nature never appears in an untouched or pure form. Pure is a word that actually does not qualify his expressive paintings. Each painting contains contradictory voices and is mixed and layered. It is violent as well as sensitive, while dark as well as light in atmosphere. His unique, expressive touch can also be seen in drawings where city and land are intertwined.

The sculptures of Jeroen Jacobs (NL, works in Berlin) are created in a work process that is a middle ground between the artist’s vision and ‘letting it happen’. What is remarkable about his concrete sculptures is that they look lively and in motion, something you would not expect from concrete. Jacobs has brought this rigid material to life: the concrete forms itself organically and moves freely through space. The work was created by thoroughly observing the material world, as much the obvious properties as the hidden ones. Jacobs looks at things such as the rest shape of a piece of furniture or sees how a metal packaging strip forms a drawing in space once it is cut off. It is important how objects behave in space for him. Only by interacting with architecture is the actual work created, underlined by his unique use of displays. On one occasion it serves as a pedestal for an image, on another one, viewers can sit on it or it is used to divide up space

Berlin Michael Markwicks series of pictures „Quiet Apocalypse“, which was created during the six months the artist stayed at the Kunstfabrik am Flutgraben (receipt of scholarship), depicts the collision between the urban world of life and extraterrestrial happenings. The workings mirror colours and energies of the megacity of Berlin and present landscapes of violently shifting realities. His large-sized paintings and smaller mixed-media-drawings show astronauts, that conquer the earth, burning cars and tents, and a number of other apocalyptic symbols, that express a new age of global fear and wonder. The parameters of the human body and the social symbols of safety collapse and merge in an atmosphere of the existential intimidation of the self and the community. Markwicks seemingly mythological findings of the pictures merge influences of german and dutch painting of the early 16th century (e.g. Pieter Brueghels illustration of hell) with the glaring colourful- ness and the graphic character of web design and contemporary urban elements, such as neon col- ours from road works or graffiti. Enamel coating and oil colours are painted or sprayed onto the can- vas resp. paper, sometimes leading to a skin-like character of the shade texture. Tents burn, bodies are reduced to steaming vessels, exploding forms spray luminous sparks – all earthly existence re- solves through the impact of exterior forces. What remains visible to the observer, is a highly ener- getic transformation process, which unfolds an intensity that gets under the skin because of the lucid expressive colouring of the oil paintings and the dynamic conduction of the pencil drawings’ strokes.

Wie verhдlt sich der Mensch zu jenem Teil der Natur, der ihm noch bleibt? Mit dieser Frage ging die Fotografin Anja de Jong (NL, arbeitet in Dordrecht) auf Reisen. Sie besuchte weltweit Orte, an denen ursprьngliche Natur und vom Menschen gestaltete Landschaft noch scharf voneinander abgegrenzt werden kцnnen. In ihren Fotos wird das Unberьhrte der Natur dargestellt, gleichzeitig sieht man es aber auch schon wieder verschwinden, denn jedes Bild enthдlt ein Element der menschlichen Zivilisation (oder Stцrung), etwa ein Grab, eine Reifenspur oder ein Observatorium. In einer Serie klarer, unsentimentaler Schwarz-WeiЯ-Fotos wird der Betrachter unter dem Titel Borderland durch Gebiete gefьhrt, die der Verдnderung unterworfen sind, unter anderem in Hawaii, La Palma, der Antarktis oder Namibia.

Michael Markwick (USA/NL, arbeitet in Dordrecht und Berlin) verbrachte einen Teil seiner Jugend in einer Wohnwagensiedlung am Stadtrand von Michigan. Ein auЯergewцhnlicher Grenzbereich, in dem Natur und menschliche Siedlung, Landschaft und Mьll miteinander verschmelzen. Seine Erinnerungen an diese Zeit bilden den Ausgangspunkt fьr verschiedene Landschaftsbilder, unter anderem Darker Dualities. Die Natur tritt in Markwicks Werk nie in unberьhrter oder reiner Form auf. „Rein“ ist ьberhaupt ein unpassendes Wort fьr seine expressiven Bilder. Jedes einzelne Werk enthдlt widersprьchliche Stimmungen, ist gemischt und vielschichtig: gewalttдtig aber auch gefьhlvoll, dunkel aber auch hell in der Stimmung. Seine einzigartige, expressive Malerhand findet sich auch in den Zeichnungen, in denen Stadt und Land miteinander verflochten werden.

Die Skulpturen von Jeroen Jacobs (NL, arbeitet in Berlin) entstehen in einem Arbeitsprozess, der die Waage zwischen gezieltem Gestalten und „Geschehenlassen“ hдlt. Auffallend an seinen Betonskulpturen ist, dass sie lebendig und beweglich aussehen. Es ist etwas, was man von Beton nicht erwartet: Er formt sich organisch und bewegt sich frei im Raum. Dem Kьnstler gelingt es, dieses sprцde Material zum Leben zu erwecken. Die Werke entstehen aus grьndlicher Beobachtung der materiellen Welt, im Hinblick auf offensichtliche wie auch auf verborgene Eigenschaften. Der Blick des Kьnstlers richtet sich beispielsweise auf die Restform eines Mцbelstьcks oder auf einen Verpackungsstreifen aus Metall, der nach dem Abtrennen eine Zeichnung im Raum bildet. Fьr Jacobs ist entscheidend, wie sich Figuren im Raum verhalten. Erst im Zusammenspiel mit der Architektur entsteht das eigentliche Werk. Sein eigensinniger Gebrauch von Displays unterstreicht dies. Einmal dient es als Sockel fьr eine Skulptur, ein anderes Mal kann der Betrachter selbst darauf sitzen oder teilt es den Raum.

Jurriaan Benschop (NL, arbeitet in Berlin) organisierte bereits Ausstellungen in Amsterdam, Porto, Heerlen und Berlin. Im September 2009 erscheint in den Niederlanden sein Buch ьber Berlin als Kьnstlerstadt (2010 in deutscher Ьbersetzung). Er ist Herausgeber des deutsch-niederlдndischen Bandes Atelier Berlin.
